Stump Grinding, done the way it should be

A stump is the last thing standing between you and using that part of the yard. Grinding it out properly means you can sod it, plant it, or put a patio on it.

Most quotes say 'grind to grade.' Grinding to grade leaves the root flare and the big lateral roots sitting just under the surface, so the spot sinks, sprouts, and won't take sod. We go below grade and take the flare with it.
  • Ground below grade, not just level with the dirt

Deep enough that the flare is gone and the ground can be finished.

Chips hauled or backfilled and tamped, and the area raked clean.

Questions we get asked a lot

How deep do you grind?

Below grade, deep enough to take the root flare. If you're planting or laying sod, tell us and we'll go deeper.

What happens to the chips?

We can haul them off or backfill the hole with them. Backfilling is free and settles over a season; hauling costs a little more and leaves a clean hole.

Can you get to a stump in the back yard?

Usually. Grinders come in different sizes and the small ones fit through a standard gate.

Will the roots keep growing?

No. Once the stump and flare are ground out the root system dies. Some species send up suckers from surface roots for a season, and those mow off.
