How to read your own tree like we do
- Does the ground stay wet for days after rain, or is it hard and compacted?
- Has anything been built, trenched, paved or parked inside the root zone in the last ten years?
- Did the tree leaf out later, or thinner, than the same species nearby?
- Can you see the root flare widening where the trunk meets the ground?
- Is there dieback concentrated at the very top of the canopy?
- Is there weeping, oozing or bark falling away anywhere on the stem?
If two or more of those are true, it is worth having somebody look. But if none of them are, the tree is probably fine and you can stop thinking about it.
