The honest limits of preparation
Storm proofing is a useful idea with a hard limit, and the limit is worth stating plainly: nothing stops a root plate lifting in saturated ground under sustained wind.
And anything with basal decay is a removal question rather than a pruning question, because pruning the top does nothing for a compromised base.
Species and history matter. Previously topped trees, water oaks and tall thin loblolly are all higher risk than a well-formed mature white oak.
Newly exposed trees deserve particular attention. A tree that grew inside a stand and now stands alone has never carried that wind load and is not built for it.
It also reduces sail area. Selective thinning lets wind pass through a canopy instead of pushing against it, though this is easy to overdo and harmful when overdone.

Here is what most homeowners never get told: the number on a quote is mostly a story about access, not about the tree. Two identical oaks, one by the driveway and one behind a fence in the back corner, are genuinely different jobs.
The pieces that come through roofs
And previously topped trees are among the worst. That regrowth is attached to the outside of a wound rather than integrated into the wood, and it fails at exactly the wrong size.
Deadwood goes first, every time. Dead limbs have no flex left, so they snap rather than bend, and they come out of a canopy in ordinary wind rather than exceptional wind. Because of that, we always start at the base and work up, rather than starting with the part of the tree you can see from the kitchen window.

Ask any company this one question before they set foot on the property: how is each piece coming down? A company that has thought about the job will answer straight away, in detail. One that has not will talk about how long they have been doing this. The first answer tells you they planned it. The second tells you they did not.

Hiring someone with the wrong equipment for the access you have. The right machine for a tight back yard is not the biggest one on the trailer, and forcing it is how lawns get destroyed.
Assuming the cheapest quote covers the same work is the quiet one. Read what is actually in each scope. Half the price difference between two quotes is usually just debris removal.
Letting a crew work without agreeing cleanup in advance is how people end up with debris across the lawn and a bill that says haul-off, additional.
Paying a large deposit up front is another. A real company does not need most of the money before the work starts, and the outfits that do are frequently gone afterward.
Timing: what actually matters and what doesn’t
Late winter is the easiest window for most tree work. The leaves are off, so the structure is visible, the ground is usually firm enough for equipment, and the trees are dormant.
Nesting season is worth a thought on elective work. We are not required to work around it, but if a job can wait until late summer we will usually say so.

If the budget is tight, buy deadwood removal on the trees nearest the house and leave the rest. That is most of the risk for a fraction of the cost.
It can wait if the tree is well clear of everything, with no deadwood visible from the ground and no history of topping.
Prioritise by target, not by tree. A modest dead branch over the porch matters more than a large one over the back fence.
