Newly exposed trees deserve particular attention. A tree that grew inside a stand and now stands alone has never carried that wind load and is not built for it.
It also reduces sail area. Selective thinning lets wind pass through a canopy instead of pushing against it, though this is easy to overdo and harmful when overdone.
What preparation genuinely does is remove the predictable failures. Dead limbs, hanging material and end-heavy branches account for a large share of storm damage.

Here is what most homeowners never get told: the number on a quote is mostly a story about access, not about the tree. Two identical oaks, one by the driveway and one behind a fence in the back corner, are genuinely different jobs.
Reading a tree before the weather does
Deadwood goes first, every time. Dead limbs have no flex left, so they snap rather than bend, and they come out of a canopy in ordinary wind rather than exceptional wind.

Good news? Most of that list is visible from the ground and cheap to deal with before the weather arrives.
What to look for before severe season
- Dead limbs anywhere in the canopy, especially over a roof, drive or seating area.
- Trees newly exposed because a neighbouring lot was cleared.
- Long limbs reaching well out over the house with most of the leaf at the tips.
- Ground that stays waterlogged around the base of a large tree.
- Branches resting on the roof or running through the service drop.
- Anything already broken and hanging up in the branches.
If two or more of those are true, it is worth having somebody look. But if none of them are, the tree is probably fine and you can stop thinking about it.
The seasonal timing angle nobody thinks about until it’s too late
Ask any company this one question before they set foot on the property: how is each piece coming down? A company that has thought about the job will answer straight away, in detail. One that has not will talk about how long they have been doing this. The first answer tells you they planned it. The second tells you they did not.
While you are at it, ask for the certificate of insurance. Ask before the work, not after. Any real company sends it the same day, and Georgia Emergency Management Agency is a reasonable place to understand why that paperwork protects you and not just us.

Skipping the written scope because the guy seemed decent. He probably is. It still costs nothing to have it on paper, and it removes every argument later.

Late winter is the easiest window for most tree work. The leaves are off, so the structure is visible, the ground is usually firm enough for equipment, and the trees are dormant.
And if the work is already overdue, the honest answer is that waiting another season rarely makes it cheaper. It usually makes it bigger.
What to do first if the budget is limited
Do it before severe season if long limbs reach out over the house, or if a big union looks tight and included. Late winter is the ideal window.
Do it now if there is deadwood or a hanging limb over a roof, a driveway, a play area or anywhere people sit. That is the cheapest work and the highest risk.
And if a neighbouring lot was cleared recently, get the newly exposed trees looked at, because their wind loading has changed completely.

Deadwood comes out first, because it is the highest-risk and lowest-cost item on any storm prep list.
Everything gets ranked. Not every property needs everything done, and we would rather you spend on the three limbs that matter than on a full canopy tidy.
We walk the property and look at it the way weather will: what is dead, what is end-heavy, what is badly attached, and what is underneath each of those.
Then cleanup as normal, chipped and hauled, drive blown off, beds raked out.
Why it is cheaper than the alternative
And the honest comparison is not prep against nothing. It is prep against an emergency call-out, a tarp, a deductible and a roofer, which is a very different number.
Doing several trees in one visit is much cheaper per tree, because most of the cost of a small job is getting the crew and the chipper to the address.
Cabling a weak union is a real cost but a small one against the alternative, which is losing half a mature tree and clearing what it landed on.
